Friends of Karen
November and December 1999

The Cannel High School Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America participated in an ongoing activity to help the volunteer organization, Friends of Karen (FOK). The Friends of Karen is an organization that provides aid to families with terminally ill children. This year, the chapter participated in two activities; the Thanksgiving Food Drive, and the Adopt-A-Child Program. FOK was very appreciative of our continued interest and support of their organization.

The Carmel Chapter Officers decided in June to support the Friends of Karen this year. Chapter Vice President of Community Service, Christine Lazzari, informed FBLA members about these events at general meetings and discussed the importance of contributing to such organizations. Signs were posted around the school and announcements were made over the loud speaker encouraging members to participate in the food drive.

Throughout the month of November, members graciously brought in over 500 canned and non-perishable food items to be donated to those families in need. The Friends of Karen expressed their extreme gratitude and asked the chapter for continuous support over the Christmas holiday.

The Cannel Chapter "adopted" a six-year old girl awaiting a bone marrow transplant. A fifty-dollar budget was allotted to purchase gifts for the child for Christmas. Chapter members purchased Barbie dolls and Barbie accessories for the little girl.

The Friends of Karen were very grateful, and expressed their thanks through letters of appreciation to the chapter. The Carmel Chapter was happy to brighten the holiday season for people in need. These events were successful and we look forward to continuing our partnership with the Friends of Karen for years to come.
