Welcome
to All New and Old Members!! |
Welcome to the 1999-2000 FBLA year. Weve noticed a few familiar faces, but also a lot of new ones. Were very excited that many of you returned to our club this year, and even more excited that so many new members are giving it a chance. Wed also like to offer a special welcome to our members coming to us from the new GFMS chapter. So far the year has been kicked off with a bang! Events such as the Car Wash, Vink Drive clean up, and PARC Telethon have all been a tremendous success. Plus, we are currently in the middle of our Candy Drive, which is also turning out to be a wonderful fundraiser. Weve had all this accomplished, and in only 2 months, We cant wait for the months to come, their sure to be exciting. We hope this year will be fun for all of you and please if you have any comments or questions, feel free to ask any of the members of our officer team, or Mr. Brooks. | Back to top |

Fall
District Meeting |
On October 6, some of our members made a trip to the Fall District Meeting which was held at Clarkstown South High School. We attended workshops which educated us on how to be successful leaders in the business world. These workshops covered topics such as dressing for success, money management, and goal setting. It proved to be a fun and educational day for us all. Not only did we attend workshops but our very own Brian Schwerdt was elected District III Reporter. So congratulations to Brian and good luck in the incoming year. | Back to top

Candy
Drive!! |
This years candy drive is turning out to be a wonderful fundraiser. Members are working hard to sell as many boxes of candy as possible. If you're reading this and havent received your box of candy yet, then please see Mr. Brooks, but remember only members who have paid their due money of $16 may have a box. If you havent paid your dues yet then please pay so that you may participate. You can sell as many boxes as you wish, as long as you turn in the money that you received from your sales. Each box that you sell takes money off of the trip to the State Leadership Conference which will be held in Rochester, as always. | Back to top

Car Wash
a Tremendous Success! |
The FBLA Car Wash which was held on September 25, 1999 in front of Carmel High School surpassed our expectations. We reached our financial goal of $500, part of this money will be put towards our goal of State Leadership Conference travel discounts. The member turnout was incredible. If all of our events run as smoothly then were sure to have a great year. Thank you to everyone who participated and if you were unable to attend then see an officer and they will tell you the next event that you may participate in. | Back to top

FBLA Point
System |
As I am sure most of you know, FBLA has a point system which were sure many old members are familiar with. So heres a brief explanation for you new members, and maybe a reminder for the old. All activities which you participate in during the year earn you membership points. When it comes time for the State Leadership Conference, the members with the highest point totals get to go on the trip, providing that they also enter in one of the competions. Points are easy to gain as long as you remain active. | Back to top

President's
Pen |
I would just like to welcome all of our members to the 1999-2000 FBLA year. As Fall gets underway, you will have the opportunity to take part in a number of worth while activities. I encourage each of you to get involved and to have a lot of fun this year. If you plan to go to the SLC in Rochester, be sure to achieve 25 points. Without the enthusiasm of our members our organization would not be as successful as it is. Feel free to pass along any suggestions or requests to myself, Mr. Brooks, or any other officers during the year.
Sincerely,
Nao Valentino, President

Meghan Towers: Vice-President of Membership |
Hello FBLA members, welcome to a new year, (yes I know that was very original). Anyway, one of the projects that I am working on this year is the Business Plan. The basic premise behind it is that you, the writer, are a new business owner and the judges are investors. Your goal is to convince these investors that your business idea is sound and has a chance of a success so that they will invest in it. Our idea this year is to open a movie theater in the Shoprite center. In addition to myself our Parliamentarian Joe Remy and an active member John Donnally will also be working on this project. I also would like to talk about our new members. We have already had our first new member meeting, which myself and Mr. Brooks considered a great success. If any new member missed this meeting, please contact me soon.
Sincerely,
Meghan Towers, VP of Member Development

Christine Lazzari: Vice-President of Community |
Welcome back everyone! This year promises to be a great one. I have a fun Community Service Project in mind for this year. Right now, the CSP committee is in the process of developing a childrens book. We are currently in the final steps of editing and illustrating the book. The book will be published and sold by local stores, in the Elementary School book sales, outside of Walmart, and at the Board of Education and Parent meetings. We plan to donate all of the proceeds to the NYS FBLA charitu, The Ronald McDonald House Charity. A marketing commitee will be developed if anyone is interested in participating. This project looks to be a lot of fun and I cant wait to see the end results. I hope all of you sign up, as many already have. I look forward to working with the 1999-2000 CHS-FBLA members! This year will be great! Remember: There can only be one, and that one is Carmel! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or Mr. Brooks!
Sincerely,
Christine Lazzari, VP of Community Services

American Enterprise, As American as Apple Pie |
Every year, the Carmel Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America participates in the American Enterprsie Project. This project aims to educate FBLA members, Carmel High School students and members of our community about the workings, and benefits, of the American (free) enterprise system. This year, our chapter will be taking on a massive American Enterprise Project (AEP) in order to offer education spanning all age levels. Elementary level students will learn through the AEP website, which is currently under construction, by the way of short stories about entrepreneurship on a level they can understand. For example, running a lemonade stand by the road in front of ones house. More formal presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint and other visual aids will be made to high school students. Through paricipation in the Continuing Education program at Carmel High School, we hope to have an opportunity to run a workshop about the American Enterprise system and starting your own business. This will give us the opportunity to expand our project to include adult education. The AEP team needs the help of as many members as possible. This means YOU. If you are interested in helping your chapter organize this project or learning about the American fee enterprise system contact the project chair, myself, Phil Gold, at [email protected], or leave a message for me with Mr. Brooks during the day. Help this years project become a success!
Sincerely,
Phil Gold, Secretary

Chris Dieck, Treasurer
|
Id llike to welcome all new and returning members to the 1999-2000 year of Carmel FBLA! My name is Chris Dieck, and I am the Treasurer of the Carmel Chapter of FBLA. To all of the returning members, I wish a great year, filled with fun and achievement. To all of the new members I have one thing to say, stick with it. FBLA may seem strange and confusing in the beginning, but if you just give it a chance, you will find that its a lot of fun. Last year I was in your shoes, a freshman new to Carmel High School, unsure of what to do, should I join or not? After my first event, I realized that FBLA was a blast, and I stayed. Now that my first year is complete, I cant help to think, what would life be without FBLA?
Sincerely,
Chris Dieck, Treasurer

Gavel Babble by Joseph Daniel Remy, RP |
What is Parliamentary Procedure? What does it do? What the heck is the previous question? You, as a new member, probably have not been experienced with Parliamentary Procedure; yet it is used in the everyday practices of FBLA. Parliamentary Procedure is a systematic way to run an orderly meeting. It saves time during our general meetings so you can participate in other activities and sports. Unfortunately, there is a lot of terminology to learn. Here is a list of some common terms used in Parliamentary Procedures: Main Motion: the way to introduce a new idea (or new business) to an assembly (group of people). When introducing main motions say, I move to (idea). Amendment: to adjust the main motion with the addition, deletion, or inserting of words. Adjourn a continuation of a past meeting Recess: a short intermission in a meeting Previous Question: to move the previous question is to bring the matter before the assembly to an immediate vote. Point of Information: if a member (thats you) is confused about what just occurred during the meeting, you may want to use this motion. Just say Point of Information during the meeting, and say, What just happened? Roberts Rules of Order: the bible of Parliamentary Procedure. If you want to know about what goes on during a meeting, read it. There are many other motions besides the ones listed above. They are divided into three classes. The Main Motion introduces business to an assembly. Subsidiary motions aid the main motion. Privileged motions are important to general meetings agenda; they include Adjournment, Recess, etc. In the next issue, we will examine these motions to give you, the member, more of an understanding of the meetings in FBLA. Who knows? Maybe, you have an idea that could be proposed at a general meeting. |

This is your Parliamentarian, Joseph Daniel Remy. Peace Out. | Back to top
